Description: The building faces west and is a two story red colored brick and wood structure..The building is located on landscaped grounds in the center of Wellsburg. The west front has a porch supported by four white colored columns rising to a balcony. The gabled roof is sloped with an octagonal white colored cupola in the center. An addition was constructed in 1913. The architect was M J Wells and the contractor was A S Craig & Company. On the south side is the red brick and stone annex built in 1977. The architect was Ray A Shaw and the contractor was H W Trushel Construction Company.
History: The county was created in 1796 and Wellsburg was selected as the county seat. The first courthouse was built by Samuel Herdman in 1797 to 1799. The second and present courthouse was constructed in 1849.
