Galax is named for the Galax urceolata an evergreen groundcover plant found throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Description: The building faces west and is a two story red colored brick and concrete structure. The building is located on landscaped grounds in the center of Galax. The west front has a projecting center section with a high portico with four red colored brick pillars. On the north and south sides of the front section are one story porches with entrances. The roof if hipped. The building houses the General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court of the 27th Judicial Circuit.

History: Before Galax became an independent city, it was part of Carroll County and Grayson County. In 1953, the first courthouse was a three story red colored brick building at 105 East Center Street which served the police and fire department. The second and present courthouse was constructed in 1991 to 1992.
