Hinsdale

Hinsdale County is named for George A Hinsdale, who was a prominent pioneer and former Lieutenant Governor of Colorado.

Description: The building faces east and is a two story white colored wood frame structure. The rectangular shaped building is located in the center of Lake City. The east front has a central entrance with transom above. Green colored trim outlines the windows and corners. The building has a clapboard exterior, bracketed cornice, cornerboards, friezeboard, transoms, and narrow windows with crown molding. The metal roof is hipped. The south side has a one story addition and behind the addition is a set of wood stairs ascending to the County District Court courtroom. In the interior are wood floors and stairs. The courtroom on the second story contains some of the original furnishings. The building houses the County District Court and County Court of the 7th Judicial District and the Municipal Court. The building was restored in 2016 to 2017.

 

See:  The courthouse is the oldest courthouse in Colorado still functioning as a courthouse. The courthouse held the first famed trial and conviction of Alferd Packer, the “Colorado Cannibal” in 1883. The oldest former courthouse built in 1874 is located in  Park County.

History:  The county was created in 1874 and Lake City was selected as the county seat. The county rented premises until the first and present courthouse was built in 1877 at a cost of $4,450.
